This table was constructed based on usable responses to Question 3b of the agency survey .

Notes:     
The percentages presented in this table are based only on usable responses, excluding missing, don’t know, and refusal responses.  All usable responses were weighted as described in Chapter 3 and in the Technical Appendix volume to represent all emergency food programs of the A2H National Network.  The sample sizes (N) also include missing data.

Missing, don’t know, and refusal responses combined are 16.5% for pantry programs, 20.7% for kitchen programs, 21.4% for shelter programs, and 15.0% for all agencies.

a For all programs, responses greater than 70 years of operation were recoded as 70 years.  Responses less than 1 year were recoded as 1 year.

The average length of operation among the pantry programs is 15 years.  It is 17 years for the kitchens and 20 years for the shelter programs.  Details follow:

  • 12.4% of the pantries, 12.1% of the kitchens, and 7.9% of the shelters have been operating for two years or less.
  • 26.3% of the pantries, 27.9% of the kitchens, and 29.7% of the shelters have been operating for 11 to 20 years.
  • 14.6% of the pantries, 16.4% of the kitchens, and 20.6% of the shelters have been operating for 21 to 30 years.
  • 9.5% of the pantries, 12.5% of the kitchens, and 15.6% of the shelters have been operating for more than 30 years.
