Age, Gender, and Citizenship Composition (5.3)
Clients interviewed were asked to provide information on age, gender, and U.S. citizenship for themselves and for at most six members of their households. Table 5.3.1 shows the distribution of each variable only among the population represented by clients interviewed at program sites. Table 5.3.2 shows the distribution among all members of client households.

All usable responses were weighted as described in Chapter 3 and in the Technical Appendix
volume to represent all emergency food clients of the A2H National Network. The sample sizes (N) also include missing data.
For age, missing, don’t know, and refusal responses combined are 1.4% for pantry clients, 1.1% for kitchen clients, 2.3% for shelter clients, and 1.4% for all clients.
For gender, missing, don’t know, and refusal responses combined are 1.1% for pantry clients, 0.8% for kitchen clients, 1.4% for shelter clients, and 1.0% for all clients.
For citizenship, missing, don’t know, and refusal responses combined are 0.6% for pantry clients, 0.5% for kitchen clients, 1.1% for shelter clients, and 0.6% for all clients.
Among the clients who come to program sites, 11.1% are ages 18 to 29; 45.7% ages 30 to 49; 25.8% ages 50 to 64; and 17.4% ages 65 and older. In addition:
Among the pantry clients who were represented at the interview sites (not including all members of their households), 10.6% are ages 18 to 29; 43.0% ages 30 to 49; 26.1% ages 50 to 64; and 20.2% ages 65 and older.
- 31.7% of pantry clients at program sites are male.
- 92.5% of pantry clients at program sites are U.S. citizens.
- Among the kitchen clients, 11.3% are ages 18 to 29, 52.3% ages 30 to 49, 25.4% ages 50 to 64, and 11.0% ages 65 and older.
- 60.8% of kitchen clients at program sites are male.
- 94.6% of kitchen clients at program sites are U.S. citizens.
- Among the shelter clients, 16.3% are ages 18 to 29, 58.9% ages 30 to 49, 22.5% ages 50 to 64, and 2.2% ages 65 and older.
- 71.9% of shelter clients at program sites are male.
- 94.9% of shelter clients at program sites are U.S. citizens.
